One of the most difficult environments for electronics to turn on and, ideally, operate over the projected threshold of operating power is the deep sea water-tight connector and cable
Whatever the applications of the deep-sea watertight connectors, it is necessary that the navigation, sonar, guidance, communication, and sensory equipment of these deep-sea machines do not experience any interruptions because the majority of the connectors (cables, semiconductors, and circuits) are attached within 17,000 tons of sea depth.
There are various types of Deep sea water-tight connectors and cables. Once the connector is properly mated with the right cable it can submerge into any depth.
This article explains different types of Deep sea watertight connectors and cables and the features of each connector.
Since many years ago, the MINI-CON line of small diameter, high density, and high-pressure connectors has been manufactured and field tested.
This deep sea water tight connector series is made of 316 stainless steel as usual, but other materials can be ordered specifically, such as titanium. Glass-sealed inserts are also available for high open-face pressure applications.
The inserts are made of Glass Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) with copper alloy, gold plated contacts. Standard connectors are made to fit pressure vessels with a 1 atmosphere of pressure.
13 sizes of type 316 stainless steel shells
203 contacts maximum
With common materials and 600-volt standard ratings, up to 16,000 PSIG (about 36,900 ft/11,250 m) is possible. For higher voltage applications, kindly contact us.
Maximum 23 amps
Uses: Remotely Operated Vehicles, umbilical links, drilling systems, and submarines
Although alternative materials, such as titanium, can be ordered, this connector series is typically made of 316 stainless steel. Glass-sealed inserts are also available for high open-face pressure applications. The inserts are made of Glass Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) with copper alloy, gold plated contacts.
316 stainless steel type
8 sizes of shell
156 contacts maximum
Up to 20,000 PSIG (about 46,133 feet/14,064 meters) using materials with conventional values for 600 volts. For higher voltage applications, kindly contact us.
Maximum 300 amps
Drilling systems, umbilical links, submarines, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and tow cables are examples of typical uses.
The 55 series of deep sea water tight connectors are made of 316L stainless steel and come in 5 shell sizes. However, other materials like titanium, aluminum bronze, and alloy 625 are also offered as options.
The PEEK 55 series connector was created to complement the already popular 55 series. It was created to satisfy the ever-increasing requirements for material selection.
The material selection was made to prevent corrosion, reduce weight, and retain connector function. This connector is rated to 10,000 PSIG and has exceptional wear and abrasion resistance (mated or unmated).
Connector for dry-mates
5 sizes of shell
24 contacts or fewer
Optional oil-filled and ethernet configurations
PEEK is a non-metallic material.
Versions with high voltage and power are available.
10,000 psig mated/unmated (22,500 ft/7,000 m approx.)
600 VDC
18 to 5 amps
Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), underwater cameras, and lights are common applications.
